Abstract

Nephrogenic ascites is a rare condition characterized by refractory ascites in endstage renal disease patient. The pathophysiology of nephrogenic ascites is not clear. The diagnosis is usually established by exclusion of other possible causes of ascites. The character of ascites is an exudate with high protein contents. Intensive ultrafiltration, strict salt restriction, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis and peritoneovenous shunt are supposed to be effective. The renal transplantation is a unique curative treatment modality. We report a case of nephrogenic ascites that had poor prognosis in spite of strict ascites control through repeated ultrafiltration
